Laser Tattoo Removal

Tattoos are no longer permanent thanks to laser technology, which is now capable of completely or partially fading unwanted tattoos. If you are donning a tattoo that you now regret, laser tattoo removal with the Laser Medlite Q-switch Nd:YAG can eliminate tattoo ink from the skin using several wavelengths. At Laserderm Dermatology & Cosmetic Laser Surgery, our physicians are carefully trained to administer laser treatment that is both safe, effective and with your satisfaction in mind.

How Does Tattoo Removal Work?

Laser tattoo removal targets the pigment in the tattoo by emitting short pulses of light into the ink. Over the course of several weeks, the ink will absorb the light and begin to break apart, allowing the body’s immune system to absorb the ink particles. The fading of the tattoo is a direct result of the tattoo ink being metabolized by the body, which also helps limit damage to the surrounding skin.

Why Choose the Medlite IV?

The Laser Medlite Q-switch Nd:YAG is specifically designed for tattoo removal, and it contains four different wavelengths that are capable of fading the many colors that a tattoo may present. The Medlite’s highest wavelength, at 1064nm, removes dark colors such as blacks, navy blues and grays while both the 585nm and 532nm wavelengths target red ink colors. The 650nm wavelength is specifically for the color green. Some colors are difficult to remove and may only fade with laser tattoo removal rather than diminish completely. Yellows, whites, purples, pinks and orange colors are not easy to remove with any laser designed to eliminate tattoos, but regardless of whether your tattoo is large or small or whether it was completed professionally or by an amateur, the Medlite can precisely reverse many of the colors in tattoos without harming the underlying skin.

Removing Your Tattoo with the Medlite IV

The specifics of your procedure will depend on the colors located in your tattoo along with its size. Other factors, like your skin color and the depth of the ink play a role in how quickly the tattoo can be removed. Tattoos that were originally completed in fine detail and with sufficient depth will take up to eight treatment sessions to remove, whereas more basic tattoos will require no more than five treatments. Typically, each session occurs every six to eights weeks in order to allow the ink to be absorbed by the body, which means that you may begin to notice results a few weeks after treatment has begun. Additionally, each session may take between five to sixty minutes to complete.

There is generally no need for anesthesia during laser tattoo removal, with most patients reporting that the administration of laser light feels like a slight snap against the skin. However, topical anesthetics can be given to alleviate any pain. Once the session is over, you may notice surface damage to the epidermis, but these wounds should heal quickly within a matter of days. You will also be given topical ointments to help ease any discomfort after each session. In order to avoid any scarring, it is important not to pick at the scabs that form after your treatment, doing so could create permanent damage to the skin. We also recommend that you wash the treatment area the day after each session and protect the region with sunscreen when you are exposed to UV light.

Because the laser is so precise, there are hardly any side effects from removing your tattoo, and with proper after care procedures, you will not be able to see any remnants of your tattoo once your treatment is complete. Possible side effects include scarring, skin pigmentation, allergic reaction, or incomplete fading of the tattoo. Your physician will review all risks and recovery instructions with you before you begin treatment.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Right for You?

To determine whether you are a good candidate for tattoo removal with the Medlite IV, a skin assessment will need to be performed by one of our physicians. We will examine the size of your tattoo, the colors present, its location on your body and your skin color and give you a realistic expectation for your results. Oftentimes, we will apply the laser on a small portion of the skin in order to witness any sort of reaction. Once we confirm that laser treatment is right for you, we will schedule you for your first treatment session.

Our goal is to work with your treatment goals, time frame and budget so that you can feel completely comfortable removing your tattoo. Each session is customizable to your needs and will be completed based on a specific treatment plan that we create for you.
